Best Case Scenario
This work is a meditation on land use. It was made as a final work for my residency at 621, the only contemporary gallery in Railroad Square Art Park, Tallahassee Florida. I used materials that were in the studio and then left behind for the next artist. I added the reindeer lichen which i gathered over a number of days from a planted pine forest in Woodvile, Florida which was about to be machine harvested for pulp. These arborcultures at maturity are quite beautiful in their lighting and floors of lichen, and the lichen adds a specifically extra lovely petricor. However, the closer the forests get to maturity, the sooner they will be taken. It is a sadness those of us that live amongst these tall trees accept. This forest was not replanted and instead is slated to become a large athletic facility. Railroad Square itself is now endangered by the same forces. The lichen was redistributed in a few safe forests after the exhibition.
